My Shimmering Scales

My son has this book that he wants me to read. All the time it seems! Most every time we sit down to read he wants to read this one. I would rather him bug me about reading rather than watching TV all day though.

The book is called "The Rainbow Fish". Its about this fish who has these beautiful shiny scales all over him. He is known by the other fish as "the most beautiful fish in the sea". Only he was very stingy. He didn't want anyone else to have his little scales. He wanted them all to himself. He was lonely and unhappy because of this. So he went to the wise old octopus who gave him some wisdom..."Give a glittering scale to each of the other fish. You will no longer be the most beautiful fish in the sea, but you will discover how to be happy".

...Whoa! Since when did they start putting such deep wisdom into kids books?! Its a trip because  it really rocked my world to read this. The idea of this story is obvious. Its better to be a blessing than to always be the receiver of the blessing. We, as adults, spend much of our adult lives acquiring "things". Don't get me wrong, I like my DVD's and my car and stuff like that. But In the grand scheme of things...We can't take any of it with us when we die. Only what we invest in others will continue.

God will use anything to get our attention about things that need fixing' in our lives. Including our kids and their books.
